Mrs. Bullock’s Five Year Lit Club List

Black Arrow book coverLit Club has been one of the highlights of homeschooling for our children.  Beginning your own club isn’t as daunting as it seems.  Start simple and pick books you want to share with your readers.  Make a commitment for a year and see where it takes you.  Feel out your group to see where their interests lie and find a few books to hook them right at the beginning.  There are countless resources online of great classics to read.  My suggestion is that you research those books you are unfamiliar with to see if they will fit your vision for your club and are acceptable to your family. Every classic is not for everyone.  One of my favorite sites is where an age appropriate list is available.

Are you worried about how to teach? A resource I really like is Teaching the Classics, a multi-age book by Adam and Missy Andrews, which is filled with many helpful tips on teaching literary analysis.   Professor Andrews has spoken at our OCEANetwork conference in the past and you can get a copy of his how-to sessions from the OCEANetwork recording library online.  That might be just the thing to get you started on your new adventure.  Happy Reading!

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. "The novel presents a future American society where books are outlawed and firemen burn any house that contains them" (Wikipedia). The thing that caught me was that the culture is bent on entertaining themselves to mindlessness. Fahrenheit 451 provides a great opportunity for discussion about the importance of books and the role of entertainment in our society, and also the consequences of going against cultural norms. Thought provoking read.

I read Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped late in life and loved it. Black Arrow is one that I recently found to put on the kids' Nooks. I think that they'll love it since they love Robin Hood and Ivanhoe so much.

I'm curious why you have "Island of Dr. Moreau- H.G. Wells" on the list. I cannot tell if it is a book written to advocate "Darwinian evolution" or to show the horrors of life without God and the depravity that man easily descends into. H.G. Wells was supposedly a serious 'Darwinist' either way. It's not on my children's reading list as I'd rather have them read other books. :) Your success is our goal Your success is our goal wrote on 07/01/16 3:06 AM

Here plenty of books I've read and at present they're one of my favorite, thus I'm about to read unknown to me. Thank you for this list.

All things considered, while your idea of instructing the "works of art" is pleasant, most writing that is "great" is not world writing, it's British Lit. While the other individual said Greek Lit. That in itself is not world writing either, and both are an extremely "white-washed" point of view. I took a Survey of Lit. Class and read Greek folklore. I read the Iliad, the Odyssey, and The Canterbury Tales. It wasn't extremely fun, yet that is the thing that I read.
